At St. Bonaventure's College, Campus Ministry goes far beyond the traditional view of chaplaincy within a Catholic school. The program promotes students becoming complete individuals who not only learn about their faith, but learn to turn their faith into action for the betterment of society — through curriculum from Kindergarten to graduation, retreats from a half-day to four days in length, and the liturgies of the school year, from daily morning masses in the Chapel to eight full-school masses, many held at the Basilica.
Jesuit Service Program
Pedro Arrupe, former Superior General of the Society of Jesus, spoke of the graduate of a Jesuit school as a "man or woman for others" — one who lives not only for themselves, who values the unique mystery of other people, and who is committed to making life better for everyone. The Jesuit Service Program fosters that growth: senior students complete volunteer placements in the community, such as tutoring at a community centre or helping at a local food bank. It is not career exploration — it is direct personal contact with people in need, so students recognize their responsibility to serve.
Retreats
Students from Kindergarten to Grade 12 all participate in a retreat at some point in their school year — beginning with half-day retreats in the younger grades and building to overnight and multi-night retreats in High School — inspired by the spirituality of Saint Ignatius of Loyola.
Social Justice Committee
Comprised of students from Grades 7–12, the committee focuses on charitable works and creating awareness of injustices around the world. Students also care for the campus garden, with all food grown donated to a local food bank.
Liturgies
Community worship is at the heart of all Christian communities. St. Bon's holds eight full-school masses each year, along with many smaller gatherings — and our renowned Music program always offers a beautiful accompaniment. Students of all ages are given a chance to participate.
